The 53rd (Welsh) Infantry Division took part in the Battle of Gallipoli and the First Battle of Gaza during the First World War. After the war, the division remained active.

Between 1939 and 1940, the division was part of the Home Defense Forces of the United Kingdom and was stationed in Wales. In April 1940, the division was moved to Northern Ireland, where it remained until November 1941. Between 1941 and 1943, the division was tasked with defending Kent and the south coast of England. The 53rd (Welsh) Infantry Division was part of the 2nd army. In October 1943, the 159th Infantry Brigade was transferred from the 53rd to the 11th Armored Division and the 71st Infantry Brigade was added to the 53rd. Until Operation Overlord, the division was training.

On June 28, 1944, the 53rd (Welsh) Infantry Division landed in Normandy and was added to the 12th Army Corps. The division participated in Operation Goodwood and in battles for the Falaise Pocket. The 53rd (Welsh) Infantry Division advanced towards the Netherlands and liberated 's-Hertogenbosch on October 24, 1944. In December 1944, the division was added to the 30th Army Corps and was one of the British divisions involved in the Battle of the Bulge. The division also participated in Operation Veritable. On March 30, 1945, the 53rd Welsh Division took part in the Tankslag in the Woold near Winterswijk, losing ten tanks.

The 53rd (Welsh) Infantry Division ended the war in Hamburg. The division was later stationed in the Rhineland and disbanded in 1947 to reform the 2nd Infantry Division in Germany. A year later, the division was revived to serve as part of the British Territorial Army. In 1968, the 53rd (Welsh) Infantry Division was finally disbanded.
